Season 22 superfinal games 11-20

After 20 games Stockfish leads 8-2 with 10 draws. Stockfish won another 3 game pairs. The only game KomodoDragon managed to win was again followed by a Stockfish win and a drawn game pair. So far the superfinal has been more one sided than I expected it to be. Stockfish beat KomodoDragon in only one game pair out of four in the premier division.

In game 11 KomodoDragon pushed pawns on the king side and castled long. For a few moves KomodoDragon thought it found something and its eval increased, but Stockfish's eval came down. KomodoDragon opened the king side and traded a pair of rooks, but Stockfish managed to castle long and get its king out of trouble. The black king was exposed but after exchanging queens it was safe enough. The game was adjudicated in a BN vs BB position.

In game 12 the engines repeated their first 17 plys before diverging from the previous game. Stockfish's eval jumped immediately after the divergence, KomodoDragon regretted its move after thinking for 11 minutes. KomodoDragon tried to attack on the queen side while its king side rook was trapped, and its king was uncastled in the center. KomodoDragon pushed the a pawn forward, Stockfish just let it through so it could use the pawn as a shield for its king.

Stockifsh had all the time in the world, after it played f6 the black DS bishop was also trapped. KomodoDragon was effectively two pieces down, though Stockfish had to protect the h4 pawn to keep the king side locked. After a while Stockfish managed to replace the guarding rook with a bishop, this added firepower to Stockfish's center.

KomodoDragon's defense collapsed and it started to lose material. Stockfish broke through the center and mated. Stockfish wins the game pair, it leads 5-1.

Games 13-14 started with a 19-ply book in the French, Steinitz, Boleslavsky variation, with an eval advantage for black. There were no exchanges and the engines castled in opposite directions. In game 13 Stockfish pushed pawns on the queen side and KomodoDragon opened a file on the king side, both engines were active against the opponent's king. Stockfish opened the queen side and KomodoDragon moved both knights forward, in a sharp position the white king hid behind a black pawn on the 2nd rank and KomodoDragon captured a bishop on the other side. The tension was relieved in a series of exchanges that reduced to a QRB vs QRB position. At one point KomodoDragon was sure it was losing, but Stockfish chose a different move and (negative) evals started to come down. The engines exchanged queens, KomodoDragon blocked the advanced pawns on the queen side and the game was adjudicated. In game 14 KomodoDragon was slower on the queen side and Stockfish attacked the king side. The white queen moved forward and (negative) evals came down. KomodoDragon opened the queen side but lost all its pawns, evals were 0 and the game was adjudicated with many pieces still on the board.

In game 15 there were no exchanges after the start, all the pawns were locked except the c and f files, the engines castled in opposite directions. After move 21 there were a few pawn exchanges and all bishops were off the board. On move 36 the engines started a long PV agreement, KomodoDragon's eval increased while Stockfish's eval decreased. The game reached a QN vs QN position, white a pawn up with a central passer. Both engines saw that Stockfish would lose its knight for the passer. On move 44 Stockfish thought for 10 minutes and its eval jumped over 4, so KomodoDragon understood the position better earlier? On move 49 Stockfish reacted to a check with an eval drop to 0.15 after 9 seconds of thinking, a blunder by KomodoDragon? Stockfish changed its mind again on the next move, its eval back over 5. KomodoDragon won the knight for its passer as planned.

Nothing was sure at this stage, Stockfish had a lot of checks in the open board and it was two pawns up with a queen side passer. KomodoDragon captured the two black pawns on the queen side and Stockfish captured the white h pawn, leaving an 8-man position on move 63. Progress was very slow, Stockfish pushed its king side pawns and tried to keep them safe. On move 89 KomodoDragon captured one black pawn, with the other on the 2nd rank. The game ended in a tablebase win on move 107.

In game 16 there was a quick minor piece exchange after book, the pawns did not lock and there was one pawn exchange on the king side. The engines played through long PV agreements and evals did not change a lot. At the end of such an agreement on move 40 Stockfish pushed the c pawn and its evals started to increase. The engines seemed to shuffle for a while and then they exchanged queens and only RRB vs RRB remained.

KomodoDragon had to keep the a pawn safe to prevent a white passer, and to defend against an attack in the center. The black pieces did not have enough room to move, eventually Stockfish exchanged a pair of rooks, broke through the center and created an advanced passer. KomodoDragon lost the bishop and the game ended in a tablebase win. There were two white wins in this game pair, Stockfish leads 6-2.

In game 17 the engines castled in opposite directions, then they played out a long PV agreement that led to a RNN vs RR position on move 22. Evals came down and the engines traded a pair of rooks and pawns. The game was adjudicated when the pawns stopped moving.

In game 18 there were no exchanges after the book start and there were no long PV agreements. On move 15 KomodoDragon's PV showed many exchanges coming, Stockfish went along with this for a few moves but then thought of a better intermediate move and its eval jumped. KomodoDragon's eval reacted two moves later.

Stockfish's c+d pawns only had one black pawn in front, a potential advanced passer. Indeed, Stockfish gave one pawn and pushed the other to c6, then provided pawn support after exchanging knights on d5. Stockfish waited until its king was safe in the corner and then opened another file on the queen side. After exchanging queens only RRB vs RRN remained.

KomodoDragon lost a rook for the passer, the win was a matter of time. Stockfish wins the game pair, it leads 7-2.

Games 19-20 started with an 11-ply book in the main line of the Owen defense. In game 19 the engines locked the center, there was one pawn and one minor piece exchange on the queen side. KomodoDragon moved its king and developed its king side rook through the h file. Stockfish kept its king uncastled and its king side rook and bishop did not move. KomodoDragon shifted its pieces to the king side and pushed pawns, Stockfish managed to move its king side pieces and then smuggled its king to the queen side. Evals came down, when KomodoDragon opened a file on the king side most of the black pieces were not there. The game was adjudicated with many pieces still on the board.

In game 20 there were no pawn exchanges after the start, the center was locked as in the previous game but this time Stockfish castled its king. by move 21 KomodoDragon traded both its knights for bishops, though a bishop pair was not an advantage in a closed position. The black king walked to the queen side though it had no pawn support there. The engines seemed to be shuffling except for one pawn and a minor piece exchange on the queen side, evals drifted up slowly.

The shuffle continued, Stockfish slowly shifted its pieces to the king side. KomodoDragon could only wait as Stockfish planned its attack, the white king moved forward on the h file to avoid back rank threats. After 20 moves the engines finally traded a pair of pawns on the king side, Stockfish moved its knight to f6.

The two black flank pawns were weak and KomodoDragon had problems moving resources from side to side. KomodoDragon gave the a pawn in the hope that a white pawn there would block the entrance. Stockfish then captured the f pawn and created a passer on the 7th rank, after exchanging queens Stockfish won a bishop for the passer. The game ended in mate. Stockfish wins the game pair, it leads 8-2.
